The NCLB mandate defines as their sole source of “highly qualified teacher” one who passes the Praxis II Elementary Education for 1st through 6th grade. The mandate also states that to teach 7th/8th grade one must pass the Praxis II in each of the core areas they teach - English, Math, Social Studies, and Science, or have 30 college credits in each core area taught. Roots Public Charter School feels that this definition is short-sighted. Research indicates that the singlemost important resource a teacher has is ones accumulated prior knowledge, experience, and achievements in the field. There is an accumulated total of 190 years of experience for the Roots staff. The Principal is listed in “Who’s Who in American Education,” has written a research based curriculum, African-Centered Interdisciplinary Multi-Level Hands-On Science, used in many schools across the country and abroad, and was awarded Gold Status for Roots Public Charter by the mayor for leading the school to achieving a majority of 3rd-8th graders becoming proficient in reading and math for the SY 2004-05. The Lead Teacher of the Pre-Primary is a DC Certified Trainer for Early Childhood Education. The founding Middle School Teacher was awarded with the National Educator Award for SY 2005-06. Therefore, below is a list of our capable staff whom we feel are truly highly qualified. Click on their name to contact them.
